David Mamet and TV show 'The Unit'
The Unit is based on an adaptation of Eric Haney’s ‘Inside Delta Force: The Story of Americas Counterterrorist Unit’. David Mamet creates and produces The Unit, adding his own personal style to the ideas from the book. The Unit are a group of elite counterterrorist personnel, they belong to the American army, but the nature of their work is covert operations; they are the silent, deadly, stealth fighters. The Unit is the name given to their organisation, but is the front behind which they conceal their true identities. Because of the secretive nature of their jobs, only minimal information is passed to the men’s wives, they realise the secretive nature of their husband’s employment, but do not know the specifics. The men have a lot of covert attributes; their uniform is non-military standard in order to distance their connection to the military, they often use coded information, and have peculiar calling signals to identify themselves to each other. The Unit does not always follow a Mamet style, but glimpses of his influence can be noted. Some common themes run throughout the series, the focus on traditional masculine and feminine roles are emphasised; the women are never involved in the work of The Unit, but maintain the home front while their husbands are away. In America, The Unit has proved to be very popular, attracting the largest number of viewer’s for its particular timeslot than any other show in the past 10 years. It boasts an exceptional cast including Scott Folley, Dennis Haysbert and Regina Taylor. The important thing to consider when watching The Unit is to bear in mind the Mamet influences, look for subtexts, he creates worlds that may not exactly reflect reality, but often have some underlying messages about the social world and human relationships. Although the ideas are not new, Mamet manages to convey a multi-dimensional world, and this is the key difference between The Unit and other shows that have done the whole ‘special agents’ theme- and what makes The Unit an must-see series.
